About Us

McMaster Internal Medicine Social Medicine aims to provide residents with a foundational exposure to the theory and practice of social medicine. Across a spectrum of social determinants of health, residents will expand upon their knowledge and skills to better serve socially vulnerable patients with unique healthcare needs.

Founder, McMaster IM Social Medicine

"Building the Social Medicine Committee and Social Medicine Rotation with a dedicated team of residents remains the most rewarding endeavour of my medical training. I draw inspiration from mentors in this field who not only treat disease within patients, but also envision healing at the systems level to achieve health equity among marginalized populations. It is my great delight to welcome the next generation of Internal Medicine residents, with their fierce commitment to health advocacy, to the team."

PGY-3, Internal Medicine
General member
"An investment in social medicine initiatives is central to improving the health of all patients! A country, community, and health care system should be judged by how it treats its most vulnerable populations. Working with the social medicine committee has afforded me an incredible opportunity to promote education, health advocacy, and foster research opportunities for my resident and staff colleagues who share an interest and compassion for refugee and First Nations health initiatives in addition to dedicated support for vulnerable populations including addiction, impoverished, and elderly communities."

"I am interested in social medicine because I strive to play a small part in creating a future where healthcare disparities no longer exist. Until then, I hope to continue to be inspired by and walk alongside vulnerable populations disproportionately affected. DR. YASMIN JAJARMI

"I am interested in social medicine because, through each patient encounter, I see evidence that providing good medical care necessitates an understanding of the social determinants that impact our population, and in turn, impact our patients. I am involved with the publicity subcommittee of our social medicine group, and feel excited to help share our committee’s vision with others. (Follow @macsocialmed on Twitter for more!)"
